MAZATLÁN._ 20 baseball players born in Mexico are currently in the minor leagues in double A and triple A, just one step away from the majors.

Sebastián Valle (injured), Andrés Ávila and Christian Villanueva (who was supposed to be in Triple-A with the San Diego Padres) are not on the list.

On triple-A there are nine: the outfielder Sebastián Elizalde (Reds); the infielder Daniel Castro (Rockies); the catcher Xorge Carrillo (Mets) and Alí Solís (Cubs), and the pitcher Julio Urías (Dodgers), Héctor Velázquez (Red Sox), Manny Bañuelos (Angels) and Luis Cessa and Giovanny Gallegos (Yankees).

At double-A there are 11 Mexicans: The first base Joey Meneses and the catcher Armando Araiza (Braves); the shortstop Luis Urías (Padres) and Jorge Flores (Marlins); the infielder Fernando Pérez (Padres); the outfielder José Cardona (Rangers), and the pitchers César Vargas (Padres), Francisco Ríos (Blue Jays), Luis Niebla (Rockies), Edwin Fierro (Rays) y Víctor Arano (Phillies), who has not seen action yet.

THE REST… There are dozens of Mexicans at single A and the rookie league as well.

For example, the Pittsburgh Pirates are helping to develop the skills of five players even that Luis “Caballito” Heredia, should be already at least in double-A, but he’s injured.

The other four are; the catcher from Mexicali, Mikell Granberry, pitcher Eumir Sepúlveda; The first baseman Carlos Muñoz and the pitcher Eduardo Vera, both on Pirate’s single A.

Who has everyone surprised in the Houston Astros organization is the pitcher Guadalupe Chávez, who is 19 years old and has announced his retirement after three good seasons with the Blue Jays organization, where he ended 11-3, 2.19 ERA, 20 BB and 100 strikeouts in 107 innings.

Guadalupe was traded last August 1st to the Astros organization in exchange for the pitcher Scott Feldman.
