Dana White documents Raulian Paiva's grisly stitch-up process after nasty UFC Uruguay cut

The battle for the unofficial “Gross MMA Injury of the Night” award at UFC on ESPN+ 14 on Saturday in Montevideo was a keenly-contested affair, with “Platinum” Mike Perry’s destroyed nose likely to attract the most post-fight traffic.

But the Florida native wasn’t the only man who needed some repair work done on fight night.

The doctors were forced to intervene halfway through the opening round of Brazilian prospect Raulian Paiva’s flyweight prelim bout against Rogerio Bontorin. The reason: A nasty gash above Paiva’s right eye.

And while the TV shots at the time showed there was absolutely no question over the octagonside physician’s call to stop the contest, they really didn’t do justice to just how bad the cut above Paiva’s right eye actually was. Thankfully (or regrettably, depending on how squeamish you are) UFC president Dana White was on hand to show us with a pair of stomach-turning pictures. He documented before and after shots after Paiva’s eyebrow was stitched up.

If you scroll beyond the next two paragraphs, you’ll see that the graduate of Dana White’s Contender Series: Brazil suffered one of the nastiest cuts we’ve seen in a while.

We’re used to seeing some graphic stuff in this sport, but these two shots are particularly gruesome. So please be warned: These ain’t pretty.

Thankfully, the staff on site at Antel Arena did a great job of stitching up Paiva, and the Brazilian paid tribute to the medics in Montevideo in a repost of White’s second pic above, saying: “Many thanks to the @ufc Medical Team for their excellent work.”

Hopefully, after a period of time on the sidelines to let his wounds fully heal, the young flyweight will get another shot inside the octagon. But, after a cut like that, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him out of action until 2020.
