Dana White on Jose Aldo making bantamweight move: 'I honestly haven't even taken that serious'

(Editor’s note: Story updated at 2:54 p.m. ET to include Aldo’s response via Twitter.)

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo recently has expressed his intentions to move down to bantamweight, and but UFC president Dana White would rather he not even try.

Speaking to MMA Junkie and other reporters on Tuesday in Las Vegas, White said he doesn’t believe Aldo can make the cut down to 135 pounds.

“Aldo sent me a text telling me he wants to do this, so we really haven’t talked about it, but I just … there’s no way that kid can make (135). There’s no way. No way.”

Aldo (28-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC) has never had the easiest cut to make the 145-pound limit, often having to use the towel at weigh-ins. So White is baffled at why Aldo is considering a move down to bantamweight at this point in his career.

“Do you remember when he was the champ and how hard it was for him to make (145)?” White said. “And he’s not any younger, so I honestly haven’t even taken that serious. Love Aldo, and I want to do what he wants to do, but I don’t think I want to see him cut to (135). I don’t think that’s going to be good for him.”

Aldo is coming off a unanimous-decision loss to Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 237, halting his opportunity at another crack at the title. He’s already lost twice to current featherweight champion Max Holloway, so a move down to bantamweight could perhaps give him new life in the sport.

Aldo wasted no time by mentioning “Triple C,” current bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo, as he wants a shot at gold right out of the gate. Cejudo (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC), who seems keen on fighting big names, responded to Aldo’s callout and said he’d be open to fighting him, as well as a long list of other established legends.

UPDATE: Aldo responded to White’s assessment on Wednesday, via Twitter.

@danawhite when I talk about something I”m talking seriously and for real. I already made a test and I can make this weight!
