Ex-UFC fighter Angela Magana releases tearful video statement after waking up from coma

Former UFC strawweight Angela Magana vows to make a full recovery and return to fighting after a serious health scare.

In an emotional video, a tearful Magana thanked her fans and promoter Combate Americas for their support and said she feels like “a very rich woman because I have a lot of time.”

“I’m going to get better, and I’ll be fighting again soon,” Magana said in a video posted to YouTube. “Nothing will stop me, man.”

Magana, 35, fell into a coma following complications from a back surgery that ruled her out of a fight against Kyra Batara at “Combate 35: Reinas.”

In the buildup to the April 26 fight, Magana had dealt with severe back pain that was later revealed to be a herniated disc. When she didn’t respond to treatment, she was diagnosed with cauda equina syndrome, requiring her to undergo emergency surgery. According to her longtime coach, Gabriel Lamastus, complications arose from anesthesia during the surgery.

Magana woke up Thursday after being unconscious for two days at University Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Prior to undergoing surgery, she posted a video to her Twitter page worrying about going under anesthesia, which her coach said caused the death of her aunt.

Below is Magana’s full statement:

“Hi, guys. I’m awake. I still feel very tired. Like, I can barely open my eyes. But thank you, everybody, for thinking about me. I feel like I’m a very rich woman because I have a lot of time. Look what happened: I almost lost all my time. But to take time to wish somebody well, what do we do with time? We make money. So time’s more valuable than money. So, thank you to everybody who took the time to wish me well. I’m going to make a full recovery. The problem was just the anesthesia. The disc procedure and cauda equina stuff was better than they thought. The surgery was great; it was just the anesthesia. I’m going to get better, and I’ll be fighting again soon. Nothing will stop me, man. And Combate Americas has been so good to me. Thank you.”

Magana most recently fought last August at Rizin FF 12, where she lost to Kanako Murata via second-round submission. She plans plans to represent Puerto Rico next year in the Olympics in wrestling.
