It appears that Henry Cejudo is chasing even more gold – or at least more cringe.
In his most recent “public service announcement,” the current UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion Cejudo called out women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko, who is coming off her second title defense, a unanimous decision win over Liz Carmouche at this past weekend’s UFC on ESPN+ 14, for an intergender fight.
Yes, you read that correctly. “Triple C” wants all the gold to himself.
“So I’m out here enjoying my beautiful Sunday in beautiful Las Vegas, but my phone just keeps blowing up,” Cejudo said in a video he posted to social media. “That somebody by the name of Valentina ‘Bullet’ Shevchenko is the most dominant champion in the world. And guess what? I get a little jelly, because you know what? She has gold, and I want that gold. Valentina Shevchenko, I have a message for you: I’m looking to become the first intergender world champion that this world has ever seen. I’m calling you out. You can be the next to bend the knee to ‘Triple C.’”
Cejudo (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) has made a habit of going to social media and laying out challenges. While this one is a little more playful, he recently called out Frankie Edgar, who announced his move down to bantamweight.
The double champion (and former Olympic gold medalist, of course) currently has a target on his back from the likes of top flyweight contender Joseph Benavidez, as well as top-ranked bantamweights Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan, but Cejudo has been calling out a different set of names. He has chosen to chase future Hall of Famers such as Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz, who he proceeded to call out after capturing the bantamweight title, in a third-round finish of marlon Moraes at this past June’s UFC 238.
Cejudo is currently sidelined after undergoing shoulder surgery and is expected to be out for the rest of the year. He hasn’t kept quiet though, as the double champ continues to compound a list of big names.
