The fact that Dillon Danis is out there making new enemies barely qualifies as news these days. The brash jiu-jitsu standout turned Bellator MMA upstart will kick off Twitter beefs at the drop of a hat.
Usually, though, he’s mouthing off at other people who make professional fighting their man gig.
So his recent back-and-forth with the Paul brothers, internet celebrities Jake and Logan, is something different.
With Logan Paul set to box rapper KSI on Nov. 9 at Staples Center in Los Angeles in a rematch of their fight held last year, Danis appeared to be attempting to troll his way into a fight with Jake Paul on the same card.
The attempt didn’t succeed, but it looks like the next-best thing will happen: Danis and Bellator president Scott Coker plan on attending the bout streamed by DAZN, which also streams Bellator events.
“I will be ringside,” Coker told MMA Junkie last week at Bellator 226 ceremonial weigh-ins in San Jose. “If I’m in L.A. and I’m free, I’m going to go. It will be a lot of fun.”
The mainstream sports media continues to turn up its nose at the Paul-KSI spectacle since it is not considered a “serious” fight. But the first bout, which was a six-round majority draw, caught those who consider themselves the guardians of serious sport off guard by selling out the 21,000-seat Manchester Arena.
Coker, as a promoter who has been open to a variety of out-of-the-box ideas over the years, understands the appeal.
No, Coker isn’t going to insult your intelligence and act as if the fight will be the 21st-century equivalent of Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier. But he knows there’s a paying audience for this, they’ll get what they pay for, and hey, if Danis tags along, that’s good for some publicity, too.
“Well, listen, to step into the ring and do what they do, you have to have some respect for that, right?” Coker said. “Is it the greatest fight of all time? C’mon. I think we know the answer to that. But, it will be entertaining, and it’s going to be on DAZN, we’re going to support our TV partners, and it will be at Staples Center not too far from here. So, we’re going to grab Dillon, and we’re going to go down there and check it out.”
As for Danis’ real-life fights, as opposed to his Twitter spats, Coker suspects we’ll see his third MMA outing sometime sooner rather than later.
“I think he’s going to fight sometime in October or November,” Coker said. “I think we’re talking to him about some opponents and things like that, so hopefully we’ll have something to announce.”
