Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Glover Teixeira may be approaching 40, but he still has a lot of fight left in him.
Riding a two-fight win streak for the first time in over three years, he will take on Nikita Krylov in the co-feature bout of UFC on ESPN+ 16 in Vancouver, and Teixeira has learned to enjoy the journey.
“I’m almost 40 but I’m feeling well, and I still enjoy training,” Teixeira told MMA Junkie. “Of course, I train the correct way, to avoid injuries. I use my experience to allow me to continue fighting, and having fun. I want to stay on this path. As far as when I might stop, I hope I can keep on fighting and beating people until I’m 50. Can you imagine that? But when the time comes to stop, I already have other things going, like my own academy. I may not be rich, but I’m doing fine.”
And Teixeira (29-7 MMA, 12-5 UFC), who has finished 25 of his 29 victories, believes he add another to his resume come Sept. 14.
“Nikita is a tremendous fighter,” Teixeira said. “He’s tough. I’m getting ready in all areas, not just striking. It’s what I always do. I’m going into battle again, feeling very motivated. I will beat him, I just don’t know how yet. I’ll look to end it before the third round.”
With inconsistencies in his past several UFC fights, Teixeira is just focused on the task at hand. He believes if he’s able to string a few more wins together, he could climb is way to the top and perhaps get one more crack at the title.
“I usually think about one fight at a time,” Teixiera said. “I don’t usually track things like that but now, it is giving me additional motivation. Maybe with a couple of wins, I could be in the top five. This could be a great opportunity before I decide to retire. Who knows, maybe I could retire as the champion.”
