Following Silva’s (34-8 MMA, 17-5 UFC) unanimous decision loss to Israel Adesanya (16-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) at UFC 234, the former longtime UFC middleweight champion said he would like his next fight to take place at May’s UFC 237 event, which is targeted for Curitiba, Brazil.
“The Spider” said a rematch with Diaz (26-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC) would be his top choice in matchup, and Silva even claimed he’d been in contact with the former Strikeforce champ and UFC title challenger about making it happen.
“I think it’s a very interesting fight,” Silva told reporters, including MMAjunkie, post-fight at UFC 234. “I talked to Nick’s manager a couple months ago, and Nick said, ‘OK, let’s go do it. Let’s talk to Dana (White).’ I’m just waiting for Dana.”
Nothing from Diaz’s side indicates that’s the case, though. Gilbert Melendez, a friend and longtime teammate of Diaz, said just this past week that Diaz is retired from MMA and he’s heard nothing to indicate a comeback is in the works.
Diaz appeared to validate that on social media. While engaging in some alcoholic beverages with his friends, Diaz said in his Instagram Stories that fighting is not exactly of interest.
“(Expletive) all this – I don’t want to hurt nobody,” Diaz said. “I just want to party.”
Diaz hasn’t fought since his original encounter with Silva at UFC 183 in January 2015, which was deemed a no-contest after both men failed post-fight drug tests, Diaz’s being for marijuana. The closest he’s come to fighting since was when it was announced Diaz was going to meet Jorge Masvidal at March’s UFC 235 event.
The fight with Masvidal didn’t exist for long, though, because UFC President Dana White later announced it was off, and said there’s nothing that makes him believe a Diaz fight will be reality in the future.
