UFC 242 is less than a month away and the promotion is bringing the heat on fight week.
From Aug. 25 all the way to Sept. 7’s fight night, Abu Dhabi will play host to an array of events from parties, the Amateur Fights Championship, fitness expos to a headlining concert by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Abu Dhabi Showdown Week will also feature the UFC 242 open workouts, which are free to the public on Sept. 4, followed by the fan experience set to take place at The Arena in Yas Island on Sept. 6. Later that night are the weigh-ins, where fighters taking part in UFC 242 are scheduled to face-off.
Finally, the week will be capped off by UFC 242, which is headlined by lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who takes on interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier. The co-main event of the night pits two top-ranked lightweights, Edson Barboza and Paul Felder who will square off in a rematch of their bloody battle which took place over four years ago at UFC on Fox 16.
The big week scheduled for Abu Dhabi comes following the announcement of the UFC’s five-year partnership with Abu Dhabi, which will bring an annual pay-per-view event and championship fight to the country.
This will mark the UFC’s third trip to Abu Dhabi. The first was UFC 112, which featured a championship doubleheader. Then-middleweight champion Anderson Silva defended his title with a unanimous-decision win over Demian Maia, and Frankie Edgar captured the UFC lightweight title when he defeated BJ Penn via unanimous decision.
Four years later, the UFC returned for UFC Fight Night 39, when Roy Nelson knocked out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first round. This year, they’re bringing an action packed week of events and big night of fights.
